Sitting Bull

If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place. He put in your heart certain wishes and plans; in my heart he put other and different desires.

Each man is good in the sight on the Great Spirit. It is not necessary for eagles to be crows. Now we are poor but we are free. No white man controls our footsteps. If we must die, we die defending our rights.

The white people think we have no brains in our heads. They are great and powerful, and that makes them make war with us. We are but a little handful to what you are.

But remember...when you hunt for a rattlesnake, you usually cannot find it - and perhaps it will bite you before you see it.

Wisdom of Native Americans

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thought nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.

When you've been gone from home, whether it be for a couple hours, several days, or maybe a very long time, a big hug, a light in the window, the smell of dinner in the oven reminds you of what's important and possibly why you've been gone in the first place. There are so many families who lead double lives. A husband or wife has to work away from home leaving the other to care for the kids and the house, paying the bills and all the little details of the home life. We can't understand how hard it is to be away from home for days or even weeks at a time, but we do understand how hard it is to be away from the one you love for so long. Those of us at home are holding down the fort so you don't have to worry and we are strong so you don't worry about that either. We want you to be safe. Please don't forget that we appreciate all your sacrifices, we miss you, and we love you.
Come back home to us when your work is through. We'll be waiting.

These are the moments that heal me.

The man who writes about himself and his own time is the only man who writes about all people and all time.
